Canada Work Permit 2026: Types, Eligibility, and How to Apply
Canada is actively seeking skilled workers to fill critical gaps in its economy. A Canadian work permit is your gateway to living and working in one of the world’s most welcoming countries. This guide covers everything you need to know about Canadian work permits in 2026.
Two Main Types of Work Permits
Employer-specific work permits (also called closed work permits) allow you to work only for a specific employer, in a specific location, and in a specific occupation listed on your permit. Most require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from your employer.
Open work permits allow you to work for almost any employer in Canada. These are available to spouses of workers and students, PR applicants, and others. No job offer is required.
LMIA-Exempt Work Permits
Many work permits do not require an LMIA. Exempt categories include workers under free trade agreements (CUSMA/USMCA, CETA), intracompany transferees, certain international agreements, and significant benefit categories. If you qualify for an LMIA-exempt permit, the process is faster and does not require your employer to advertise the job to Canadians first.
Provincial Nominee Work Permits
Some provincial nominee programs issue nomination letters that include work permit support, allowing candidates to apply for an employer-specific work permit while their PR application is being processed.
