Canada Study Permit 2026: The Complete Application Guide for International Students
Canada remains one of the world’s top destinations for international students, and for good reason. World-class universities, a multicultural society, and clear pathways to permanent residence make Canada an exceptional choice. Here is your complete guide to applying for a Canadian Study Permit in 2026.
What is a Study Permit?
A Study Permit is an official document issued by IRCC that allows foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. It is required for most programs longer than six months.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify you need an acceptance letter from a DLI, proof you have enough funds to cover tuition and living expenses, no criminal record, good health (a medical exam may be required), and proof you will leave Canada when your permit expires unless you apply to change your status.
Student Direct Stream (SDS) — Faster Processing
If you are from an eligible country, the Student Direct Stream can significantly speed up your application — often to 20 business days. SDS requires upfront payment of the first year of tuition, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD $20,635, and an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher in each band.
Working While Studying
Most full-time students at a DLI can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during the academic term and full-time during scheduled breaks — all without a separate work permit.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
After graduation, most students are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit allowing them to work in Canada for up to three years. This work experience can then be used to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry.
