Canada Open Work Permit 2026: Who Qualifies and How to Apply
An Open Work Permit (OWP) is one of the most flexible and valuable immigration documents available in Canada. Unlike employer-specific work permits, it allows you to work for almost any employer, anywhere in Canada, in most occupations. In 2026, knowing whether you qualify could change your life.
What is a Canadian Open Work Permit?
An Open Work Permit is not tied to a specific employer or job offer. You can change jobs, explore career opportunities, and work full-time or part-time without updating your permit. It gives newcomers and temporary residents the freedom to build a career in Canada on their own terms.
Who Qualifies for an Open Work Permit in 2026?
Spouses and partners of skilled workers: If your spouse or common-law partner holds a valid work permit in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation, you are likely eligible for a Spousal Open Work Permit.
Spouses of international students: If your partner is a full-time student in an eligible master’s, doctoral, or certain bachelor’s program, you may qualify.
Permanent residence applicants: If you have applied for PR and are awaiting a decision, you may be eligible for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) to remain employed while your application is processed.
Refugee claimants and protected persons: Individuals who have made a refugee claim in Canada may also qualify for an open work permit while their case is assessed.
How to Apply
Most open work permit applications are submitted online through the IRCC portal. You will need a valid passport, proof of your spouse or partner’s status in Canada, proof of your relationship, and proof of your own current immigration status. Biometrics may be required.
The government fee is CAD $155 for the work permit plus a CAD $100 Open Work Permit Holder fee in most cases.
